Love After Love by Dennis Wallcott The day will come When with elation you will greet yourself arriving at your own door in your own mirror And each will smile at the other's welcome Saying sit here, eat. You will love again the stranger who was yourself. Give wine, give bread Give back your heart to itself To the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit, feast on your life, feast on your life. |
Wild Geese by Mary Oliver You do not have to be good You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. |
Our chronic fascination with failure and disappointment makes it extremely difficult for us to enjoy the simple blessings of the moment. . . . When we anchor our awareness in the body, we are less able to talk ourselves out of a moment of lightness or joy. . . .
Most of us are naturally compassionate, but for some of us, the wounds of
childhood have suffocated our natural generosity toward ourselves and
others. We often feel sad and troubled because we are unsure how to love,
how to be helpful to ourselves and others, how to be most useful to the
family of the earth. Our task is not to learn how to be loving; the love
within us is already full and alive. Our practice is to melt the fear and armor
that imprisons our hearts. Then our impulses to love and our inclinations to
be generous and kind blossom easily and surely within us.

The opposite of arrogance is indeed humility -- but not the decadent humility of denying one's gifts and uniqueness. Rather, the healthy humility of remaining true and close to the earth and the things of the earth. Simple living. Simplicity is today's very accurate synonym for humility.

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them, And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers: and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. - Ezekiel 36:26-28 |
And what does the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. - Micah 6:8 |

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. - Psalm 139:9-10 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. - Hosea 6:6 |
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? - Isaiah 58:6 |
